Strength in a Time of Crisis: What Helps?
February 2, 2026 | 5 CommentsHello Open Heart Project,
Each morning, the Open Heart Project Sangha gathers to meditate and to tell the truth about what is happening. Recently, the group was larger than usual. That alone says something about the moment we’re in.
I don’t have a teaching that makes this time acceptable or less painful. There is no way to explain it away. What we can do is see the suffering clearly, without denial and without false comfort, and notice how we respond when things fall apart.
So where do we turn?
Drawing on Buddhist teachings, I spoke about the Human Realm as the place where we can wake up and respond with sanity. When I cannot defeat my enemies, I can still strengthen my friends. That shift restores energy and reminds us who we are.
Listen to today’s message and post in comments about how you’re feeling on your journey to creating sanity in these beyond difficult times.
With love,
Susan
A meditation practice is a way to find strength in a time of crisis.

Thank you. Tonight you have strengthened this friend, a friend who was wondering earlier today just how many times I have viewed videos of Alex Pretti’s murder during the past week. I like to think that your silent chants at Auschwitz somehow reached the souls of those who suffered there. As your wisdom tonight reached my soul. As perhaps, our collective spiritual ruminations might reach the souls of all those who have been murdered during the history of our country (yes, I do agree with Michael Carroll that there is a spine of hypocrisy that has supported our society since its inception). Thank you Susan, for EVERYTHING. Eileen XO
Thank you for these reflections and affirmations, Eileen. We are in this together. Love, S
Thank you Susan for your sanity and great heart.
I’m a Canadian who feels your pain, as I would for a close cousin. And who worries about the poison that’s seeping in here.
Much love and strength to us all.
Maggie
Thank you, Maggie. It is good to be there for each other. Much love, Susan
Thank you Susan for your encouraging words and wisdom.
There are so many things that can be done to over come the feeling of despair-strengthening friends-keeping a sane vision in the face of insanity–‘sending little tendrils of sanity in the face of insanity’-so beautifully spoken!
Heartfelt thanks for your inspiration.
