The Three Stages of the Spiritual Journey: Stage One

Audio-only version is here.
Meditation practice begins at 23:15.

Dear Open Heart Project,

Hello, I hope you are well and feeling strong during this time of uncertainty and possibility. Why do those things always have to go together?! RHETORICAL.

When it comes to our spiritual practices (whatever they may be), both uncertainty and possibility are always present so in some sense, we are in the perfect training ground for awakening. In the Buddhist view (and no one has to be a Buddhist to make this information of use!) the journey has three distinct and inseparable phases.

This week, I begin a new series: The Three Stages of the Spiritual Journey. The first stage, as you will learn, is about establishing a strong foundation, the second is concerned with heart opening (video coming on Sept 20), and the third is about seeing the whole world as sacred (video will arrive Oct 4).

As you know, these video series are free. It is my delight to create them for you. Please forward to anyone who may find them beneficial.

Thoughts? Yes, please! Always love to hear your questions, reflections, doubts, and jokes. Feel free to leave in comments.

Love, Susan

This was a perfect teaching for me … I am going to a meditation retreat with Judith Leaf in Maine, and was curious about these 3 areas of practice… and your summary did the job! Thank you for your generous open heart.

So glad to hear it, Alison! And how wonderful that you’ll be practicing with Judy. She is a skillful and deep teacher. I very much look up to her. Would love to hear your impressions of the 3 yanas as she presents them! Enjoy! With love, Susan

Susan, I’d like you to know that you have encouraged and inspired me each and every day of my spiritual journey since I joined the Open Heart Project. Before becoming an ordained interfaith minister in NYC in 2007 I belonged to a Buddhist sanga on LI and I took the bodhisattva vow. Your explanations today about the three stages of the spiritual journey took me back to those wonderful days days and encouraged and inspired me once again.
    Sending my gratitude and blessings,

It sounds like you are doing so much to live your bodhisattva vow!

Thank you Susan for today’s video that helps me so vitally in my endeavours to continue on the journey of waking up to my (and our) true nature. I had stopped meditating for the past four months through a severe shoulder injury, and I’m glad I can start again to reconnect.

Bonnie, I’m deeply happy you found this helpful. And I hope you’re not being too hard on yourself about your meditation? Physical injury can really throw us off in so many ways. Sending prayers and wishes for your healing. So glad we are practicing together. With love, Susan

Susan – please keep these teachings coming! You have a wonderful gift to put these concepts and practices in easy to understand terms. Receiving these on Monday gives me a focal point to begin my week and practice. Wish these were weekly instead of biweekly, but I appreciate them regardless!
