Meditation is so much easier with eyes closed. Why do you teach an eyes-open practice?

Fran participated in the Open Heart Project’s 21-Day meditation challenge and was good enough to do the practice I teach, Shamatha meditation, during that time. Shamatha is practiced with eyes opened and the gaze cast down. For people who are used to meditating with eyes closed (as Fran was), this can seem plain weird. It is easier to meditate with your eyes closed, so what is the deal with eyes-open meditation practice? (Spoiler alert: it has to do with wakefulness…it’s hard to be awake when your eyes are closed…)
