When it comes to love, the most difficult people to love are…the ones we already love. It’s a challenge to remain open and connected, whether to lovers, friends, or family members. You know you love them! They love you too! Still, the ups and downs never end. One moment you may feel close and trusting and the very next it could all disappear. And reappear. Disappear. And so on…
What makes you feel loved may not be what makes others feel loved. What constitutes intimacy and harmony for you may be unrecognizable to your closest companions. And vice-versa. I remember one sunny summer day when I was lying on the couch in our living room, reading and thinking my thoughts. My partner was out working in the garden. I felt so happy–what a perfect tableau. After a few hours, he came inside and said, “let’s go do something, we haven’t been together all day.” I said, “what do you mean? We just spent the whole day together.” We looked at each other and laughed. Apparently my love language was it’s great to be separate together. His was more like, it’s great to be together together. Go figure.
We each have our styles when it comes to love and companionship. For me, nothing has been more helpful in understanding this and making space for the ways others’ hearts function than my very very favorite subject: the enneagram. (This year we will celebrate our 26th anniversary. 26!!!) And it’s not just helpful in marriage. The enneagram has helped me understand my siblings, friends, students, and colleagues–and, most of all, myself.
Please join me on July 21 for a three hour workshop about the enneagram and love.
We will go over each of the nine types and then discuss what makes each type feel loved as well as what may make it difficult to love them. We’ll talk about what we wish others knew and accepted about us in loving relationships and how to be more fearless in our own way of giving and receiving love.
