SUMMARY:Fearless Creativity Spring Retreat Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Fearless Creativity: Writing & Meditation Retreat\nAustin\, TX\nReserve your spot in the info session here. \nTwice a year\, I lead small\, in-person retreats (limited to 12 people) in my house in Austin\, TX. They offer a chance to practice together more deeply\, allow our minds to rest\, and discuss the journey. And eat tacos! \nThe upcoming retreat is “The Spring Sessions: Fearless Creativity: A Meditation & Writing Retreat“. \nWhether you think you’re a “writer” or not\, if you have a longing to say something…share something…craft something…express yourself in some known or unknown way…rest back into your creativity—this gathering is for you. \nRetreat attendance is by application. Because space is limited and these retreats tend to fill quickly\, a deposit is required. We will let you know within a day or so if you’re accepted and if\, for any reason\, you’re not\, your deposit will be returned in full\, immediately. Note: One full scholarship is offered. \nI look forward to talking it all over in the info session. \nProgram Details:\nWHAT: A 4-day writing and meditation gathering that’s specifically designed to: \n\nSupport you to get a lot of writing done\nReview meditation as a stand-alone practice and a support for creativity\nGive you the time and space you need to write\nOffer insights from my 15-year career as both a writer and a teacher\nLeave you with a 3-step daily at-home meditation and writing practice\nDemonstrate how your wisdom and creativity respond when you take a break from the busy-ness of everyday life\nIn addition\, there will be an optional evening gathering for all who wish to explore the enneagram!\n\nIt is a rare and precious thing to take time for yourself and your voice in this way. Bring your journals\, laptops\, writing projects\, ideas\, and intentions. \nWHEN: May 22 – 26\, 2024 \nWHERE: My house in Austin\, Texas \nLimited to 13 participants. \nIf you have questions about the retreat\, I’d love to hear them. I know it’s not easy to take time away from everyday life. Money is involved and it’s natural to wonder if it is worth it. Because it’s in my house\, it can be…weird. Personal! I understand! \nI invite you to bring all questions to a free info session I’m hosting on Zoom on March 6th from 7pm – 8pm ET. All who register will receive the recording. \nRegister to save your spot here.\nIf you’re interested but can’t join live\, register anyway and you’ll receive a link to the recording. And if you want to be sure your questions are addressed\, please email them to me.

SUMMARY:Buddhism IRL (in real life)
DESCRIPTION:Buddhism IRL: An Introduction to Buddhist Teachings\nMarch 9-April 27 \nSpecial Bonus Enneagram Class: May 4 \n$333 payable in full or in three installments\nTwo full scholarships offered \n  \nAbout the Program\nI can’t think of a time when Buddhist wisdom has been more necessary. It has so much to teach us about living a life of brilliance\, kindness\, and courage. No one has to “be a Buddhist” or adopt foreign beliefs to benefit from its extraordinary insights into how to build a meaningful\, powerful life. \nIn this eight week program (plus a special bonus ninth class for those interested in the enneagram)\, we will immerse ourselves in foundational Buddhist teachings such as the Four Noble Truths\, the Six Paramitas (transcendent actions)\, and the Four Karmas (ways to express our mindfulness out in the world). \nThis exploration is for those of you interested in discovering your unique journey through engaging with the profound and ancient teachings of Buddhism. Our exploration will not be academic\, it will be very personal. We will focus on teachings about how to live everyday life to the fullest\, for our own benefit and the benefit of the world. \nOur guiding question is not “what does this mean?” but “what does this mean to me?” \n  \nThe Curriculum\nMarch 9 \nMeditation: A Love Story \nMeditation creates the container for spiritual exploration. It begins with releasing self-aggression to discover an indestructible well-spring of love. We will look at meditation as a spiritual practice (rather than self-improvement) and discuss the three actions you can take to make your practice sustainable and joyful. \nTopics covered: \n\nComplete practice review\nContainer Principle: Five sacred acts\nCreating a sustainable daily practice (3 jewels)\nKeeping practice sacred rather than self-help\n\n  \nMarch 16\nThe Four Noble Truths \nThese four truths form the foundation for the entire Buddhist path\, but they are not particularly Buddhist. Rather\, they are profound observations about how reality actually works\, what causes suffering\, and how to liberate ourselves and others from such suffering.  \nTopics covered: \n\nThe Three-Yana view\nThe Four Noble Truths\, including\nThe Noble Eightfold path\n\n  \nMarch 23\nThe Six Paramitas and The Heart Sutra: Part One \nThe six paramitas (transcendent actions)\, closely associated with Mahayana Buddhism\, explain how to bring our practice off the cushion and into our lives. “Para” means gone beyond and “mita” means arrived. So we don’t just try to make a better world\, we actually accomplish it by these six actions. \nWith some understanding of the paramitas\, we are equipped to explore the journey of transcendence\, a journey that is described (inscrutably) in the Heart Sutra\, one of the most revered and central texts within Buddhism. For me personally\, it is at the very center of my practice and has been for more than 30 years.  \nThis short (two pages) text doesn’t explain the journey particularly\, but seems to invite it by some mysterious means. We will read through it together and discuss how to practice it. \nTopics covered: \n\nSix Paramitas: Generosity\, Discipline\, Patience. Exertion\, Meditative Absorption\, Wisdom\nThe Heart Sutra: What is it and how to incorporate it into daily practice\n\n  \nMarch 30\nThe Six Paramitas and The Heart Sutra: Part Two \nA continuing conversation… \n  \nApril 6\nFour Karmas \nThe Four Karmas (Pacify\, Enrich\, Magnetize\, Destroy) offer an infallible menu of options to choose from when deciding how to meet each moment. They also act as protection for our state of mind. \nTopics covered: \n\nPacify\nEnrich\nMagnetize\nDestroy\n\n  \nApril 13\nFive Buddha Families \nA discussion of the five ways wisdom manifests within you. \nTopics covered: \n\nVajra family\nRatna family\nPadma family\nKarma family\nBuddha family\n\n  \nApril 20\nDrala \nDrala is a Tibetan word that means “above the enemy”. What is above all our enemies? Something awake\, brilliant\, and alive. To understand drala is to touch in with the essential life force of all we encounter. When we train ourselves to do so\, the world simply unfolds in a different way. \n  \nApril 27\nMandala Principle \nBringing it all together. \n  \nSPECIAL BONUS NINTH CLASS\nMay 4 The Buddhist Enneagram \nI realize that not everyone is an enneagram nerd. BUT I AM! (My latest book\, The Buddhist Enneagram is evidence.) This last class is for anyone who wants to take a deeper look at this amazing system to type themselves and learn more about how it can support the spiritual journey. \nAll classes will be on Saturdays from 10a EST to 12n EST. There will be suggested readings for each class and optional writing assignments to encourage introspection and  then\, if you wish\, a chance to share your thoughts with others on our private forum.\n  \nAbout Your Teacher\nSusan Piver \nI’ve been a student of Buddhism for over 30 years and founded The Open Heart Project\, an online mindfulness community. I’ve seen over and over how these teachings offer support for living deeply and well\, even during tumultuous times.  \nI’ve written many books about meditation and bringing Buddhist wisdom into everyday life\, including Start Here Now: An Open-Hearted Guide to the Path and Practice of Meditation\, The Wisdom of a Broken Heart\, The Four Noble Truths of Love\, and The Buddhist Enneagram. \nCost\n$333\nEnrollment is now closed. \nPlease note:\nSince attendance is limited\, there are no full or partial refunds offered. \nTwo full scholarships offered. \nThe application deadline has passed. All who applied have been contacted.

SUMMARY:Intensive practice and ordinary life: A free info session with Michael Carroll & Susan Piver
DESCRIPTION:March 20\, 2024 | 7PM – 8PM EST \nReserve your spot in the info session here. \nWhen people ask me how to deepen their meditation practice\, I almost always suggest a meditation retreat. When you step away from the busy-ness of daily life\, you simply see more clearly. \nThat said\, meditating for extended periods can seem like an impossible burden\, even a little bit scary. However\, millions of people over the centuries have done this. In this conversation\, we will explore how best to engage intensive practice and discuss how such discipline impacts the very fabric of our ordinary life. \nWe will also be available to answer any questions about the ten day retreat we are teaching this summer at Drala Mountain Center\, June 26 – July 6. During this info session\, we will talk about the benefits of stepping out of ordinary life and also share details of the retreat for those who are interested. \nPlease register here for the March 20 info session\, 7:00-8:00 PM ET. \nAll who register will receive a link to the recording even if you cannot attend live. \n
