SUMMARY:The Dharma of Recovery
DESCRIPTION:How do the paths of meditation and recovery intersect? What light can the dharma shed on the suffering of addiction and compulsion?  How can meditation practice inform our understanding of power and powerlessness? \nAn interactive 2-hour program\, Scott will lead an exploration of the questions above as well as other questions participants raise during the program. \nAs we approach the holiday season\, please join Shambhala meditation teacher and Heart of Recovery discussion leader Scott Perkins for insights into these questions. Discussion followed by Q & A. \nThis webinar will be recorded and the recording made available for viewing for 30 days. \nAbout Scott\nScott Perkins began studying and practicing Buddhism while in India in 1988.  He received his Master’s degree in Buddhist Studies from Naropa University in 1992.  While Naropa provided a rigorous course of academic study\, Scott was more deeply impacted by the experiences that illuminated one universal fact: we all desire to be free of suffering.  Planning for an academic career\, he abruptly changed paths to social services and has worked to merge his meditation practice with his professional life since that time—with each one informing the other over the years. \nIn addition to direct service work with homelessness\, substance abuse\, mental health\, and terminal illness\, Scott has over 18 years executive leadership experience developing and implementing strategic management\, communications\, and fundraising programs for regional and international nonprofits.  He has been a teacher and leader in Shambhala since 1994.  A person in recovery himself\, Scott works as a Recovery Coach and serves as the Chairperson for the International Heart of Recovery Working Group and has provided assistance to Shambhala Centers and retreat centers developing Heart of Recovery programs throughout the country. \nScott is the Director of Development for a health care policy organization in Washington\, DC.  He lives in Maryland with his husband\, Jonathan Kirkendall\, and his two dogs.  He has a life-size wooden rocking horse in his back yard. \nAll proceeds towards the Heart of Recovery organization \nAn email will be sent out\, the day before the webinar\, with a link to view the discussion. \nQuestions?
