SUMMARY:Free info session August 5\, 7 pm ET to talk about Inexplicable Magic: A 5-day in-person retreat in November
DESCRIPTION:Meditation was never meant to be just another tool for stress relief. At its heart\, it is a spiritual practice—one that helps us meet life with wisdom\, compassion\, and fierce courage. These are not abstract qualities. They are real\, and urgently needed in our world right now…and can be rediscovered on retreat.  \nI get that going on retreat is a complicated notion. Everyone is so busy. It costs money. You don’t know who else will be there or if you’ll like the food. At least these are the things I think about!  \nHowever\, to take time away from the stresses of daily life and turn down the noise is essential. This is how we reconnect to our inner wisdom\, love\, and courage.  \nI hope you’ll join me to talk all this over at a free info session on Tuesday\, August 5 at 7 pm ET. We will talk about the power of retreat (and what really goes on) and I’ll share details about an upcoming opportunity to practice together\, in real life\, at beautiful Kripalu\, November 30–December 5\, 2025.  \nI look forward to seeing you!  \n  \nPlease register here for the Aug. 5 info session \n7:00-8:00 pm ET \nAll who register will receive a link to the recording. Questions? Email us.

SUMMARY:Free Info Session about the Sunday Sanity Summit
DESCRIPTION:Register here for the free 60-minute info session.\nStart your week with sanity\, strength\, and support\nJuly 1\n7pm – 8pm ET\nAbout a month ago\, I started something small—just a gentle experiment\, really. It was a response to the ache and intensity of simply being human right now. I called it the Sunday Sanity Summit\, and the idea was simple: let’s gather\, reflect\, and support each other through it all. \nWhat began as a trial has quietly grown into something much more—a space of real connection and shared humanity. People have shown up so beautifully. Here are few reflections that have touched me: \n(The Summit) allows me to get to know people in a meaningful way which creates a stronger sense of community… There are no strangers—the details are different\, but we share fears\, worries\, hopes\, and dreams. – Beth \nIt’s not only a grounding practice but a way to feel less alone… It has become a weekly touchstone. – Gail \nToday was my first time attending\, and I already want to keep going. I’d be grateful to be part of the group for as long as it continues. – Sandra \nIf you want to see what this is all about\, please come to a free info session where I will go into depth about what makes this weekly gathering so powerful \nPlease register here. \nIf you can’t attend live\, you’ll receive a link to the recording. \nI hope to see you there.

SUMMARY:Free Info Session about an upcoming course: Inexplicable Magic
DESCRIPTION:Register here for the free 60-minute info session.\nHow to bring more sanity to the world\nApril 15\n6pm – 7pm ET\nAt this time of uncertainty\, it can be difficult to imagine what you or I could do to stem the tide of pain and anger. While it’s true that we can’t mandate a positive direction for the events of the world\, we can mandate a positive direction for our world. We can settle our minds. We can order our environment. We can express care for those we encounter; for our loved ones\, friends\, neighbors\, communities. We can actually–slowly\, slowly–do our part to shift the balance away from insanity and cruelty to sanity and decency.  \nIt seems that it begins by reestablishing agency within our own minds and hearts. Rather than having our attention yanked hither and yon by social media\, news apps\, and the constant invitation to freak out\, we can decide when and what to pay attention to. In this way\, our actions to create real change come from a place of strength rather than desperation. \nIf this sounds like some kind of magic\, that is because it is. The magic of remaining awake. Of continuing to care. Of continuing to move forward against very strong currents of hatred and confusion. It begins with\, you guessed it\, a strong meditation practice.  \nDon’t take my word for anything I just said. Please come to a free info session where I will make seven suggestions for establishing and strengthening your world so that it shines a bright light into the world–which needs your light now\, more than ever. I’ll also share details of my upcoming four-week course by the same name.  \nPlease register here. \nIf you can’t attend live\, you’ll receive a link to the recording. \nThose who attend live will also have a chance to sign up for a post-info session one-to-one Zoom conversation with me to talk further about Inexplicable Magic.\n(10 15-minute slots will be available from April 17-21).  \nI hope to see you there.

SUMMARY:Your Life is the Path: A Kripalu Program
DESCRIPTION:  \nYour Life is the Path \nBuddhist Teachings for Navigating Everyday Life with Vision and Love \nApril 11-13 \nKripalu \nLenox\, MA \nPlease join me for a special in-person retreat at Kripalu\, a beautiful program center in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts.  \nAs winter slowly turns to spring\, let’s gather together for a few days of deep practice\, community\, and conversation about the very personal nature of the spiritual journey. \nIn Buddhist thought\, there are three paths to enlightenment. The monastic path and the cave dweller involve turning away from the distractions of everyday life. Only the third path—the householder yogi—involves turning deeply toward everyday life as a way to wake up. No matter how chaotic and uncertain life is\, there are practices to help you recover balance and sanity in the midst of it all. \nOn this weekend retreat\, we will explore the following:  \n\nMeditation as a spiritual practice rather than self-help \nA daily ritual to keep fiercely connected to your open heart\, clear mind\, and indestructible vitality\nSix transcendent actions to deepen your relationships \nFive steps to create a sacred environment\n\nWe will also explore the Heart Sutra\, an ancient text that connects you to wisdom beyond concept. It’s also the subject of my most recent (very short!) book\, Inexplicable Joy.  \nReturn home understanding how to make everyday life an expression of your spiritual practice. \nAll the details\, including a comprehensive schedule\, are here. \nI hope to see you there! \nWith love\, \nSusan \n  \nPS The food is great. Just saying.

SUMMARY:The Open Heart Path: A Deep Meditation Retreat\, An info session on March 26
DESCRIPTION:Free Info session March 26\, 6 pm ET\nRegister here \nWhen people ask me how to deepen their meditation practice\, I almost always suggest a meditation retreat. When you step away from the busy-ness of daily life\, you simply see more clearly.\n\nThat said\, meditating for extended periods can seem a little bit scary. (Will I be able to do it? What if I can’t?) However\, millions of people over the centuries have done this. During this info session\, we will explore what really happens on a meditation retreat and the profound benefits that can follow. \nI’ll also be available to answer any questions about the week long retreat I’m leading this summer at Drala Mountain Center\, August 25-Sept. 1. I look forward to talking it all over with you!   \n  \nPlease register here for the March 26 info session\, 6:00-7:00 pm ET \n  \n\nAll who register will receive a link to the recording.\n\nI hope to see you there.

SUMMARY:Free Info Session to Hear More about Susan's New Book\, Inexplicable Joy
DESCRIPTION:Register here for the free 90-minute info session.\nRight now countless humans are reciting the Heart Sutra—no matter when “right now” happens to be. This ancient\, essential Buddhist text carries with it a mystery of origin and a myriad of versions for consideration. The longest is 100\,000 lines. The version contemplated in Inexplicable Joy is 43 lines. The ultimate is no lines at all. Just one syllable: AH. \nThe Heart Sutra is multi-layered\, sacred\, and sometimes impenetrable. It also lays out the path to full enlightenment.  \nIn Inexplicable Joy\, I share my very personal understanding of this formidable text and discuss the inner meaning and timeless qualities of the Heart Sutra. \nYou are warmly invited to explore Inexplicable Joy: On the Heart Sutra\, with me on Feb 12 at a free 90-minute info session. This book is the first in a new series being published by Lionheart Press called Buddhism Beyond Belief. \nWe will discuss how this short book is organized to bring The Heart Sutra into your life—while keeping all of its mysteries intact. \nRegister for the free info session on February 12th at 6pm here.\n\nA link to a recording will be sent to all who register\, so don’t worry if you can’t attend live. \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Free info session Jan 10 to discuss the Buddhist Path (and a new program\, Buddhism Beyond Belief)
DESCRIPTION:Buddhism Beyond Belief\nJanuary 30 – April 10\, 2025\nBuddhist wisdom provides indestructible insight into how to live a life of compassion\, wisdom\, and bravery–even (or especially) during unprecedented times.  \nFrom my 30+ years of Buddhist practice and study\, I can tell you this: the dharma is real. It is a deeply nuanced guide for living a good and potent life. If you have any interest in exploring the Buddhist path and what it can offer to your inner life\, relationships\, creativity\, and home life\, please join me on Jan 10 for a free info session to discuss how to bring Buddhist teachings to life in your life. This has nothing to do with adopting new beliefs or pretending to be all “spiritual.” Rather\, it is about deepening your ability to love\, to ride the waves of uncertainty and possibility\, and to find ways home to your true self.  \nDuring this info session\, we will discuss how the Buddhist path is structured\, how it can support you\, and the power of a personal daily ritual to bring it all down to earth. \nI’ll also share details of an upcoming 11-week program I’m teaching\, Buddhism Beyond Belief: The Path of the Householder. It begins January 30 and is a chance to dive into this profound body of wisdom together. \nIt all happens on January 10. \nPlease register for the 10a ET session here. \nPlease register for the 6p ET session here. \n  \n A link to a recording will be sent to all who register\, so don’t worry if you can’t attend live. \nHope to see you there! \nLove\, Susan \n

DESCRIPTION:$54 or FREE if you join the Open Heart Project Sangha\n\n \n  \nWe long for change.\nAs we enter a new year\, it is natural to think of what we want to create\, change\, or leave behind. It is a time to dream and imagine what could be\, who we want to become\, and how we can create more love and goodness in our lives and in the world. Whether you just want less stress (who doesn’t?!) or a way to create peace on earth for all beings (who doesn’t?!)\, there is one tool that can help you\, perhaps better than any other: \nA strong\, steady meditation practice.\nAs we practice it in the Open Heart Project\, meditation is much more than a self-improvement technology. It is a way to stabilize your mind in the midst of chaos to remain focused\, strong\, and kind. It is a path to love. \nAs we sit in simplicity and silence\, we soften. As we soften\, we become vulnerable. Vulnerability is the root of love\, not to mention insight\, creativity\, presence\, and even courage. These are the seeds we plant with our practice. \nYou don’t have to head to a mountaintop or commit to many hours a day of meditation practice (although both are awesome) to reap these benefits. You just have to sit down. Every day. For 10-20 minutes. And that is exactly what we will do together from Jan 1-21. \nJoin me for a 21-day meditation challenge.\nAlmost everyone I have ever spoken to about their meditation practice has trouble practicing consistently. Hey\, me too! It’s not as simple as “making” yourself do it. We need more than individual resolve. A chance to reflect and connect with community provide the additional needed support. I promise–with these components (intention\, a way to contemplate the journey\, and knowing you are part of a community) your practice will take root in a lasting way. The 21-day challenge provides it all. \nWhen you sign up\, you’ll receive: \n\nEach morning beginning on Jan 1\, a daily guided audio meditation delivered right to your inbox. We will practice for 10 minutes a day during week one\, 15 minutes a day in week two and 20 minutes a day in week three. I think you’ll be surprised at how much easier it is when all you have to do is click “play.”\nA wrap-up gathering to check-in\, discuss questions\, and hear your reflections.\n\nJanuary 25 @ 12:00 pm -1:00 pm ET\n\n\nA PDF guide to the program that lays out the steps to create a home practice.\n21 short bonus videos\, one per day\, each with a meditation “tip.”\n\nBy the end of this 21-day period\, you will have a meditation practice that you can count on. \nI look forward to practicing with you. \nCost: $54\nCost for Open Heart Project sangha members: $0\nPlease consider joining the Open Heart Project sangha to receive this and other programs and gatherings for free.\n\n \n Purchase for $54 here \n \n \n\n \n Free with Monthly Sangha Membership here \n \n \n\n \n Free with Yearly Sangha Membership here \n \n \nSangha members register for free here \nQuestions? I will make a list of great places to eat and listen to music—Austin is such a wonderful place and I want these retreats to be both deeply serious and completely joyful. \nRetreat is a precious opportunity to disconnect from the day-to-day and give your wisdom mind and loving heart a chance to relax\, open\, and discover something deeper. I look forward to accompanying you on the journey. \nThese retreats are small and personal to ensure a cohesive group. \nFrom past participants in Susan’s in-house retreats:\nI had an incredible experience attending the meditation retreat with Susan Piver held in Austin this June. I was skeptical that a non-facility event would create a similar atmosphere and connections made at a facility designed for retreats. The intimacy of being in someone’s home and Susan’s abilities made this the best retreat I have attended. We became a group of people that might not have ever joined to gather under any other circumstances that bonded under Susan’s guidance and we all accomplished what we needed to for that time. It was a special retreat that will stay with me. –Joell\, Longwood\, FL \nBeing in Susan’s home with 12 others opened me and my heart…It was the perfect container and helped me to connect the way my meditation practice has supported me and carried me through some of the hardest times of my life.  It is what has opened my heart and softened me in a way that allows me to bring love and compassion to people and experiences in a way that I don’t think I would have been able to otherwise. –Barb\, Livonia\, NY \nWill I need a car?\nIt depends where you stay. I live in the heart of South Austin right on a bus line. It is also easy to call Uber or Lyft. The house is 2 miles from downtown Austin\, so plan accordingly if you’d like to stay there. \nWhat should I bring?\nBring your journal\, laptop\, and comfortable clothes for lengthy sittings and writing sessions. I will supply meditation cushions\, chairs\, and whatever is needed for group meditation practice. \nIf you want to go swimming with me in the mornings\, pack a bathing suit and towel. (There will be time after our swim to go back to where you’re staying to shower and change.) \nWhat is included in the price?\n\n4 program days of writing\, meditation\, and community (and fun…you can’t come to Austin and not have fun)\nMeditation instruction and conversation about spirituality\n4 lunches (healthy\, with vegetarian\, vegan\, and gluten-free options)\nCoffee\, tea\, juices\, water\, light snacks throughout the day\nAn evening enneagram workshop\nDinner on the evening of Oct 19th\nMeaningful conversation with Susan and your fellow writers\nA chance to finally get your project moving\n\n \nWhat is the refund policy?\nA refund will be offered (minus the deposit) if you cancel by September 16\, 2024. \nWhat if I have other questions?\nEmail us! Happy to answer any questions. \nFAQs\nWhere is your house? What neighborhood is it in? \nThe house is on Powell Circle in South Austin\, just south of Oltorf and South First streets. \nResidential and quiet but very close to restaurants\, shops\, and the nightlife of South Congress Ave (aka “SoCo.”) \n  \n \n \n \n  \nCan you hook me up with a roommate to help defray some of the expense? \nMaybe. The application form has a space to indicate if you’d like a roommate. If there is more than one of you who does\, I’ll introduce you and you can take it from there. \nWill Susan read and critique my work? \nNo. I will supply the time\, space\, environment\, and rhythm for you to write your heart out\, but I am not a writing teacher. Rather\, I’m a well-published author who has some sense of the vagaries of the writing life (including the path to being published). I’m happy to share what I’ve learned along the way to support you. \nIf there are those who want to get together on their own in the evenings to share work\, that is an option. \n \nI love the idea of a morning swim. Will it be cold? How will I get there and is there a fee? \nBarton Springs is a huge in-town\, spring-fed pool and it is truly my happy place. The water is 68 degrees year-round. There is a huge parking lot. It is a short Uber/Lyft ride from either my neighborhood or downtown Austin. (Especially at 6:30am!) There is no fee before 8:00 am. \nWill I have to come to your house in my wet bathing suit? \nNo\, there will be time to get back to wherever you’re staying to shower and change. \nWhere will we go to eat on October 19th?\n \nWe will be going to True Food Kitchen in Austin. \nHope to see you there! Love\, Susan \nIf you have any questions\, please contact us\, here.

SUMMARY:Free webinar August 10: Meet the inner teacher
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Inner Teacher\nFree Webinar\nAugust 10\n10:00a – 11:15a ET\nReserve your spot in the webinar here. \nOver the years\, I’ve heard from many of you who wish to find a teacher. I truly understand that wish! On one level\, it is not an easy question to answer. Though there are great\, realized teachers out there\, they are few and far between. It is hard to know who to trust.  \nIn the Buddhist view\, there is\, however\, one teacher who is always available and singularly trustworthy: the inner teacher. In fact\, the job of the outer teacher is to introduce you to the inner teacher\, whether through in-person teachings\, books\, or videos. In fact\, if the outer teacher does not make this introduction\, they’ve fallen down on the job. \nPlease believe me when I say the inner teacher is real. There is a part of you that always knows the truth. How do we tune in more deeply to this profound and intimate voice? \nPlease join me on August 10 for a discussion on meeting the inner teacher. It is free. A link to the conversation will be sent to all who register\, so don’t worry if you can’t attend live. I’ll also send you a video to one of my meditation teacher training classes to give you a taste of what learning with me looks like. I’m only providing this resource to those who register for this webinar\, so if you’re curious\, sign up here. \n(I’ll also share information about our upcoming meditation teacher training which is designed to help you support others to discover their own inner teacher through our shared practice. All who register for this webinar will receive a special price to join the training.) \nI’m not a huge fan of hyperbole\, but this discovery is among the most important you can ever make. I look forward to talking it over with you. \nReserve your spot in the webinar for free here.

SUMMARY:Learn Meditation as a Spiritual Practice Retreat at Drala Mountain Center
DESCRIPTION:Join Susan Piver and Michael Carroll on this 3-day retreat at Drala Mountain Center where participants will explore what it means to live an awakened life.\nWhen it comes to meditation practice\, what often gets “left on the table” is the noble\, spiritual wisdom that naturally flows from the practice — a profound\, intimate experience validated by countless practitioners over thousands of years of Buddhist practice. The same technique that helps you sleep better has also been shown to cultivate patience\, wisdom\, and the ability to love deeply. It can even lead to complete liberation from suffering!. That’s one hell of a practice. \nDuring this introductory program\, we will explore: \n\nWhat is mindfulness-awareness meditation and where did it come from?\nHow does this simple act of “sitting still” unleash wisdom & compassion?\nHow can we establish a sustainable meditation practice?\nWhy are the Three Supports and theThree Sacred Acts central to the practice?\n\nThis program will offer a thorough and gentle introduction to mindfulness-awareness meditation with time for discussion and optional personal conversation with one of the teachers. Short daily yoga sessions included. \nFor more details and registration information\, click here.

SUMMARY:Free webinar: How to create a meditation & writing practice
DESCRIPTION:Reserve your spot for this free webinar here. \nHave you ever wondered why it is so hard to get to your writing desk? (Or sofa or bed or wherever you like to write and create?)\n\nI wish I could tell you exactly why\, but I do not know.\n\nHowever\, I do know what helps.\n\nI want to share with you the tools I have created to support the writing process. The first person I tested them out on was myself and over the past decade I have shared them with hundreds of students at the meditation and writing retreats I have led all over the world. \n\nI discovered these tools by accident when I was on a month-long meditation retreat in the Colorado Rockies. Our schedule was intense. We practiced sitting and walking meditation from around 7:00 am to 9:00 pm (including breaks for meals and an afternoon work period). It took a lot of commitment! (By the way\, if you ever have the opportunity to go on such a retreat\, DO IT. It is the best thing\, ever.)\n\nBefore I went\, I requested from the retreat leaders special dispensation to write for a few hours each day of the final week. I was on a book deadline and unless this was granted\, I would not be able to meet it. They very kindly gave permission to do so.\n\nI was shocked to find that it was the best writing experience of my life. I approached my work without hesitation. Ideas flowed. When I returned to the manuscript each day\, I was able to recapture the exact moment where I had left off and re-enter the flow without obstruction. Most notably\, writing\, which had always felt difficult and uncomfortable\, had an element of joy. I was not afraid. It was awesome.\n\nI remember walking across a field of July wildflowers one afternoon to rejoin the retreat. (Yes\, it was extremely idyllic.) I felt overwhelmed with happiness. Writing was so wonderful! Words were pouring out! I was meditating for hours each day! In my everyday life\, I struggled to practice for 30 minutes a day and write 1000 words. In this setting\, I was meditating for hours and words were just\ncascading onto the page. I thought\, it can’t just be me for whom this combination—meditation and writing—works. I bet it could work for others.\n\nNow\, a decade later\, I can report to you that repeated anecdotal evidence has confirmed that insight time and again.\n\nOn June 13th at 6pm et\, I’m hosting a free webinar to talk about how to combine meditation and writing into a practice that works for your life.\n\nRegister to save your spot here.\n\nAll who register will receive the recording.\n \nWhether you think you’re a “writer” or not\, if you have a longing to say something…share something…craft something…express yourself in some known or unknown way…rest back into your creativity—this gathering is for you.\n\nI look forward to talking with you.

SUMMARY:Free info session June 11: Deepen your practice to teach meditation to others
DESCRIPTION:Meditation Teacher Training\nSeptember 7 – November 16\, 2024\nReserve your spot in the info session here. \nThere is no path that can expand your relationship with meditation like learning to teach it to others. (It’s not “teaching” so much as it is “reminding\,” but we’ll get into that during training.) \nThrough studying and discussing foundational Buddhist teachings that reveal why this simple practice is so powerful\, participants in the Open Heart Project Meditation Teacher Training will explore the personal meaning of their own spiritual journey as the basis for supporting others to do the same. Whether you go on to teach now or in the future\, your own practice will deepen and become even more your own. \nOne of our students shared about the experience of learning to teach meditation with the Open Heart Project:  \nI quickly found that this course skillfully exposed my misconceptions about the Buddhist path\, meditation practice and what it means to teach others. The community of other students taking the course was the best part. These are some of the most brilliant and kind people I have met. …They held space for me to be as I am. They gave me confidence when I was unsure of myself. They gave me honesty when I needed it\, even when it was hard to hear…this may be the most in-depth program the Open Heart Project has to offer… I highly recommend it. \nJoin me on June 11th at 6pm ET for a free info session on what teacher training can do for your meditation practice and to learn details about our upcoming 11-week training . (It begins in September.)  \nSave your info session spot here. Don’t worry if you can’t make it live. All who register will receive the recording. \nThe teaching path has been utterly transformational in my own life. I can’t wait to share it with you.

I look forward to accompanying you on the journey. \nThese retreats are small and personal to ensure a cohesive group.\nA $500 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your spot. \n  \nTo apply for a scholarship:\n \n\nFrom past participants in Susan’s in-house retreats:\nI had an incredible experience attending the meditation retreat with Susan Piver held in Austin this June. (There will be time after our swim to go back to where you’re staying to shower and change.) \nWhat is included in the price?\n\n4 program days of writing\, meditation\, and community (and fun…you can’t come to Austin and not have fun)\nMeditation instruction and conversation about spirituality\n4 lunches (healthy\, with vegetarian\, vegan\, and gluten-free options)\nCoffee\, tea\, juices\, water\, light snacks throughout the day\nAn evening enneagram workshop\nDinner on the evening of May 31st\nMeaningful conversation with Susan and your fellow writers\nA chance to finally get your project moving\n\n \nWhat is the refund policy?\nA refund will be offered (minus the deposit) if you cancel by April 22\, 2024. There is a parking lot. \nWhere will we go to eat on May 25th?\n \nWe will be going to True Food Kitchen in Austin. \nHope to see you there! Love\, Susan \nIf you have any questions\, please contact us\, here.

SUMMARY:Heart Sutra Day-Long Retreat
DESCRIPTION:May 18\, 2024 | 10:00 am – 5:00 pm\nAustin\, TX\nA Day of Practice and Contemplation of the Heart of Transcendent Wisdom\nCost: Pay What You Can\nSuggested Donation: $50\nLunch Included\n \nThe Heart Sutra (or Prajnaparamita Sutra) is one of the most meaningful texts in all of Buddhism. Prajna means wisdom and paramita is variously translated as “perfected” or “transcendent”. So this text is about the ultimate wisdom. In a way that is both direct and inscrutable\, it lays out the path to liberation from suffering.  \nIn this one-day program\, we will practice meditation and review the text\, line by line. The version we will discuss is here. You’ll see that it’s not particularly long. \nThe point of this gathering is not to master the text intellectually\, but to develop a feeling for it. Though I’ve recited it for close to 30 years\, I’m not sure I understand it any better today than when I first read it–but my relationship to it grows deeper and deeper in ways I can’t describe. It exerts a kind of magic. It points the way to enlightenment. It explains emptiness. In a very concise way\, it shows us what to do to be fully alive.  \nOne of my favorite lines is: “Since there is no obscuration of mind\, there is no fear.” The Heart Sutra points the way to clarifying the confusion that underlies all our fears.  \nIf you’re interested in learning more and considering how you might incorporate the Heart Sutra into your personal practice\, please join me on May 18 for a one-day exploration in a small\, supportive group. \n \nSuggested offering is $50 but please contribute what makes sense to you. \nMay 18 \n10:00 am-5:00 pm \nIncludes lunch \nLocation: 504 Powell Circle\, Austin \nLimited to 15 students

SUMMARY:Free info session May 15: learn about our 2024 Meditation Teacher Training Program
DESCRIPTION:Meditation Teacher Training\nSeptember 7 – November 16\, 2024\nReserve your spot in the info session here. \nPlease join me 7:00p ET-8:00p ET on May 15 to learn about the Open Heart Project 2024 Meditation Teacher Training program which begins September 7.  We will talk about the curriculum\, course requirements\, and how (in my opinion) the teaching path is the richest path of all–whether you go on to teach or not! \nWe are lucky to live in a time when meditation is easily accessible and no longer positioned as new age bs. When I began to practice 30+ years ago and told family and friends that I was a meditator\, they thought I had joined a cult. Now one can learn to meditate in schools\, hospitals\, fitness clubs\, and even on an airplane. (A flight I took recently had a “calming meditations” channel.)\n \nOne of the reasons meditation has become so mainstream is because science says it’s good. Thank you science! Thank you for the extensive research you’ve done over the last few decades  to prove that meditation can regulate blood pressure\, lower the stress hormone cortisol\, help with pain management\, insomnia\, and all manner of things. \n \nHowever… While appreciating that a few decades of research into meditation has concluded beyond doubt that “there’s science behind it\,” we may forget that 2500+ years of Buddhist (anecdotal) research has also proven that meditation doesn’t just help manage so-called negative mind states\, it actually gives rise to extraordinarily positive ones. Western science may have deconstructed depression\, pain\, anger\, and so on–but on the Buddhist side\, compassion\, wisdom\, and fierce courage have been deconstructed. If you stop and look\, you will see that a very precise path has been laid out that explains exactly how to get there. \n \nWeirdly\, these steps are almost always left out of meditation teacher trainings. I guess people think it sounds too woo-woo. That is sad to me because teachings from the Buddhist path–the very teachings that gave rise to the practice we now know as mindfulness meditation–are what give the journey meaning and power beyond what can be described.\n \nI’m so extremely happy to offer a Meditation Teacher Training program that brings the practice together with foundational Buddhist teachings. This 11-week program begins September 7. All the details are here. \n \nAt the May 15 info session\, I’ll be online to talk it all over with you. I’ll share details about the curriculum and answer any questions you may have. After the info session\, I’m offering a limited amount of 15-minute Zoom meetings with me to talk together one-to-one about any remaining concerns.\n \nIt would be great to see you there! Please register for the info session here. A recording will be sent to all who register so don’t worry if you can’t join live. \nI hope to see you there.

SUMMARY:Look\, Look\, Look\, Look\, Look Again: Buddhist Wisdom Reflected in 26 Artists
DESCRIPTION:Free webinar to talk with author and teacher Kevin Townley about the Five Buddha Wisdoms. Register here.\nOne of the best things about the Open Heart Project Sangha is KEVIN TOWNLEY. If you’ve ever heard him teach\, you know exactly why I say that. His approach to the dharma is completely unique while being fully rooted in tradition. He illustrates deeply nuanced teachings in a fully relatable way–while being hilarious. And charming. And extremely suave.  \nI’m delighted to invite you to a free webinar with him to discuss the Five Buddha Wisdoms\, also the topic of his recent book\, Look\, Look\, Look\, Look\, Look Again: Buddhist Wisdom Reflected in 26 Artists. These teachings are central in many schools of Tibetan Buddhism. They describe the five ways wisdom arises in each of us.  \nThe Open Heart Project’s Lionheart Press is the publisher of this book and I’ve never been more proud of any project I’ve been involved in. (Even though I just hung around while Kevin and editrix extraordinaire Crystal Gandrud did all the work.) \nCheck out this sampling of Amazon reviews: \nI’m completely awed and enchanted by this fabulous book! It’s like an all night conversation about life and art with a brilliant funny friend. Kevin’s ability to draw from a diverse range of cultural references is catnip for a liberal arts nerd like myself. Plus I learned about an amazing group of female identified artists who were mostly unknown to me. What a treat! Nutritious and delicious! \nI had read the electronic version of this book\, but after receiving the print version\, I am glad that I ordered it. There is much to study\, much to savor and much to simply be wowed over. Kevin Townley’s erudite and amazingly well-researched text is fast-paced\, contemporary and witty\, fleshing out individual artists’ works with commentary and a few interviews. His thorough understanding of the five wisdom energies (or Buddha families) allows a unique lens through which the reader can appreciate both the works and the teachings more fully. The art is beautifully presented\, with a both a detail and the whole piece in each chapter. While it would make a wonderful text for a college course in art appreciation\, it is also accessible and entertaining for the casual reader. When a book opens windows and doors and encourages one to “Look\, Look\, Look\, Look\, Look Again\,” the invitation cannot be refused. The reader need not be an art savant or a Buddhist (or even know much about Buddhism) to derive deep enjoyment from this truly unique work. Well done. \nKevin’s brilliant sense of humor is on display as he takes the reader on a wild journey through an intersected corridor of art\, art history\, and Buddhist wisdom told while exploring the Five Buddha Families / Wisdom Energies as they manifest through a fantastic selection of female artists. Kevin makes art\, meditation\, and the dharma feel very near and accessible to all. \nThe people have spoken. They love you\, Kevin. \nPlease join us on May 9 at 7p ET for a free webinar with Kevin. He’ll talk about each of the wisdoms and there will be time for conversation. \nRegister here. \nIf you haven’t read his book\, please do. You can find it here. You’re welcome. \n  \nA B O U T   K E V I N: \nKevin Townley is a writer/performer\, and has been studying Buddhism since 2010. He currently practices with the Sokuko-Ji Zen community under the guidance of Kyoun Sokuzan. Kevin completed the Interdependence Project’s teacher training program in 2012. He is passionate about exploring the interplay of meditation and art-making while encouraging others to bring their own innate humor and insight to their meditation practice. His first book Look\, Look\, Look\, Look\, Look Again: Buddhist Wisdom Reflected in 26 Artists was published by Lionheart Press.

SUMMARY:Intensive practice and ordinary life: A free info session with Michael Carroll & Susan Piver
DESCRIPTION:March 20\, 2024 | 7PM – 8PM EST \nReserve your spot in the info session here. \nWhen people ask me how to deepen their meditation practice\, I almost always suggest a meditation retreat. When you step away from the busy-ness of daily life\, you simply see more clearly. \nThat said\, meditating for extended periods can seem like an impossible burden\, even a little bit scary. However\, millions of people over the centuries have done this. In this conversation\, we will explore how best to engage intensive practice and discuss how such discipline impacts the very fabric of our ordinary life. \nWe will also be available to answer any questions about the ten day retreat we are teaching this summer at Drala Mountain Center\, June 26 – July 6. During this info session\, we will talk about the benefits of stepping out of ordinary life and also share details of the retreat for those who are interested. \nPlease register here for the March 20 info session\, 7:00-8:00 PM ET. \nAll who register will receive a link to the recording even if you cannot attend live. \n

SUMMARY:Buddhism IRL (in real life)
DESCRIPTION:Buddhism IRL: An Introduction to Buddhist Teachings\nMarch 9-April 27 \nSpecial Bonus Enneagram Class: May 4 \n$333 payable in full or in three installments\nTwo full scholarships offered \n  \nAbout the Program\nI can’t think of a time when Buddhist wisdom has been more necessary. It has so much to teach us about living a life of brilliance\, kindness\, and courage. No one has to “be a Buddhist” or adopt foreign beliefs to benefit from its extraordinary insights into how to build a meaningful\, powerful life. \nIn this eight week program (plus a special bonus ninth class for those interested in the enneagram)\, we will immerse ourselves in foundational Buddhist teachings such as the Four Noble Truths\, the Six Paramitas (transcendent actions)\, and the Four Karmas (ways to express our mindfulness out in the world). \nThis exploration is for those of you interested in discovering your unique journey through engaging with the profound and ancient teachings of Buddhism. Our exploration will not be academic\, it will be very personal. We will focus on teachings about how to live everyday life to the fullest\, for our own benefit and the benefit of the world. \nOur guiding question is not “what does this mean?” but “what does this mean to me?” \n  \nThe Curriculum\nMarch 9 \nMeditation: A Love Story \nMeditation creates the container for spiritual exploration. It begins with releasing self-aggression to discover an indestructible well-spring of love. We will look at meditation as a spiritual practice (rather than self-improvement) and discuss the three actions you can take to make your practice sustainable and joyful. \nTopics covered: \n\nComplete practice review\nContainer Principle: Five sacred acts\nCreating a sustainable daily practice (3 jewels)\nKeeping practice sacred rather than self-help\n\n  \nMarch 16\nThe Four Noble Truths \nThese four truths form the foundation for the entire Buddhist path\, but they are not particularly Buddhist. Rather\, they are profound observations about how reality actually works\, what causes suffering\, and how to liberate ourselves and others from such suffering.  \nTopics covered: \n\nThe Three-Yana view\nThe Four Noble Truths\, including\nThe Noble Eightfold path\n\n  \nMarch 23\nThe Six Paramitas and The Heart Sutra: Part One \nThe six paramitas (transcendent actions)\, closely associated with Mahayana Buddhism\, explain how to bring our practice off the cushion and into our lives. “Para” means gone beyond and “mita” means arrived. So we don’t just try to make a better world\, we actually accomplish it by these six actions. \nWith some understanding of the paramitas\, we are equipped to explore the journey of transcendence\, a journey that is described (inscrutably) in the Heart Sutra\, one of the most revered and central texts within Buddhism. For me personally\, it is at the very center of my practice and has been for more than 30 years.  \nThis short (two pages) text doesn’t explain the journey particularly\, but seems to invite it by some mysterious means. We will read through it together and discuss how to practice it. \nTopics covered: \n\nSix Paramitas: Generosity\, Discipline\, Patience. Exertion\, Meditative Absorption\, Wisdom\nThe Heart Sutra: What is it and how to incorporate it into daily practice\n\n  \nMarch 30\nThe Six Paramitas and The Heart Sutra: Part Two \nA continuing conversation… \n  \nApril 6\nFour Karmas \nThe Four Karmas (Pacify\, Enrich\, Magnetize\, Destroy) offer an infallible menu of options to choose from when deciding how to meet each moment. They also act as protection for our state of mind. \nTopics covered: \n\nPacify\nEnrich\nMagnetize\nDestroy\n\n  \nApril 13\nFive Buddha Families \nA discussion of the five ways wisdom manifests within you. \nTopics covered: \n\nVajra family\nRatna family\nPadma family\nKarma family\nBuddha family\n\n  \nApril 20\nDrala \nDrala is a Tibetan word that means “above the enemy”. What is above all our enemies? Something awake\, brilliant\, and alive. To understand drala is to touch in with the essential life force of all we encounter. When we train ourselves to do so\, the world simply unfolds in a different way. \n  \nApril 27\nMandala Principle \nBringing it all together. \n  \nSPECIAL BONUS NINTH CLASS\nMay 4 The Buddhist Enneagram \nI realize that not everyone is an enneagram nerd. BUT I AM! (My latest book\, The Buddhist Enneagram is evidence.) This last class is for anyone who wants to take a deeper look at this amazing system to type themselves and learn more about how it can support the spiritual journey. \nAll classes will be on Saturdays from 10a EST to 12n EST. There will be suggested readings for each class and optional writing assignments to encourage introspection and  then\, if you wish\, a chance to share your thoughts with others on our private forum.\n  \nAbout Your Teacher\nSusan Piver \nI’ve been a student of Buddhism for over 30 years and founded The Open Heart Project\, an online mindfulness community. I’ve seen over and over how these teachings offer support for living deeply and well\, even during tumultuous times.  \nI’ve written many books about meditation and bringing Buddhist wisdom into everyday life\, including Start Here Now: An Open-Hearted Guide to the Path and Practice of Meditation\, The Wisdom of a Broken Heart\, The Four Noble Truths of Love\, and The Buddhist Enneagram. \nCost\n$333\nEnrollment is now closed. \nPlease note:\nSince attendance is limited\, there are no full or partial refunds offered. \nTwo full scholarships offered. \nThe application deadline has passed. All who applied have been contacted.

We will let you know within a day or so if you’re accepted and if\, for any reason\, you’re not\, your deposit will be returned in full\, immediately. Note: One full scholarship is offered. \nI look forward to talking it all over in the info session. \nProgram Details:\nWHAT: A 4-day writing and meditation gathering that’s specifically designed to: \n\nSupport you to get a lot of writing done\nReview meditation as a stand-alone practice and a support for creativity\nGive you the time and space you need to write\nOffer insights from my 15-year career as both a writer and a teacher\nLeave you with a 3-step daily at-home meditation and writing practice\nDemonstrate how your wisdom and creativity respond when you take a break from the busy-ness of everyday life\nIn addition\, there will be an optional evening gathering for all who wish to explore the enneagram!\n\nIt is a rare and precious thing to take time for yourself and your voice in this way. SUMMARY:Buddhism IRL: Free Info Session
DESCRIPTION:I can’t think of a time when Buddhist wisdom has been more necessary. It has so much to teach us about living a life of brilliance\, kindness\, and courage. No one has to “be a Buddhist” or adopt foreign beliefs to benefit from its extraordinary insights into how to build a meaningful\, powerful life. \nI’ve created an eight week program (plus a special bonus ninth class for those interested in the enneagram) in which we will immerse ourselves in foundational Buddhist teachings such as the Four Noble Truths\, the Six Paramitas (transcendent actions)\, and the Four Karmas (ways to express our mindfulness out in the world). \nOur guiding question is not “what does this mean?” but “what does this mean to me?” \nInterested in learning more? \nJoin me on February 27th at 6pm ET for a free info session.\nAll you have to do is register here.\nBring your questions and we’ll talk about the program and how you can make use of it.\nIf you can’t make it live\, no problem! Register and we’ll send you a link to the recording.
