SUMMARY:Building a Mindful New Year
DESCRIPTION:6 Days of Free Teachings to Gather Wisdom\, Compassion\, and Courage Together\n\n \nRegister here\n\nDecember 26-31 from 3:00-3:45 pm EST\n  \nTranscendent generosity is found in contentment;\nIts essence is simply letting go.\nDiscipline is not to displease the Three Jewels.\nThe best patience is unfailing mindfulness and awareness.\nDiligence is needed to sustain all the other perfections.\nMeditative Absorption is to experience as deities all the appearances to which one clings.\nWisdom is the self-liberation of grasping and clinging;\nIn it there is neither thinking nor a thinker.\nIt is not ordinary. It is free from fixed convictions.\nIt is beyond suffering. It is supreme peace. \n                                                 –Jigme Lingpa \n\nWe are living in an unprecedented time of divisiveness\, prejudice\, misinformation\, and fear. \nEverything feels unclear at best. We are trying to comprehend the incomprehensible. Grasp the ungraspable. Contribute to the good without adding to the confusion.  \n  \nCreating a sane world may seem impossible. It is not.\nWe can overcome aggression\, remain open hearted\, and see clearly what is needed in each moment.  \nAccording to Buddhist thought\, there are only six skills you need. \n  \n \n  \nThe six paramitas (or transcendent actions) have the power to transport us to the shore of sanity\, decency\, kindness\, and complete liberation.\nDon’t take my word for this. (Or anything.) Explore them yourself and see what you find.  \nTo support your personal exploration\, the Open Heart Project has invited a collection of accomplished Buddhist teachers to teach us about these powerful actions\, December 26 – 31. This program is free. \n \nEach day at 3:00 p.m. EST\, a different dharma teacher will lead a 45-minute session to explore one of the paramitas. We will start with generosity on December 26th and end with wisdom on December 31st. Each class will include a brief guided meditation practice followed by a talk and discussion. \nYou will hear teachings from a variety of perspectives and have a chance to ask questions and be in dialogue with the teachers and each other.  \nYou are invited to drop in to one or all sessions. If you can’t attend live\, don’t worry: each gathering will be recorded and all who register will have access to the recordings until February 1.  \nPlease don’t miss this opportunity to gain insight into these potent teachings and\, as important\, the strength that comes with practicing together in community. You are not alone! There is much to learn! It is all possible! \nSchedule:\nDecember 26: Generosity with Susan Piver \nDecember 27: Discipline with Bridget Bailey \nDecember 28: Patience with Marisa Viola \nDecember 29: Exertion with Maho Kawachi \nDecember 30: Meditation with Kevin Townley \nDecember 31: Wisdom with Crystal Gandrud \n\n  \nTHIS PROGRAM IS FREE. All you have to do is register.\nIf you can’t make it to the sessions live\, no worries. We’ll send you a link to the recordings. Recordings will be available to view through Feb. 1\, 2026. \nLove\,\nSusan \nRegister here\n\nHere are your teachers:\nDecember 26\nGenerosity\n3:00 p.m EST with Susan Piver \n \n  \nDecember 27\nDiscipline\n3:00 p.m EST with Bridget Bailey \n \n  \nDecember 28\nPatience\n3:00 p.m EST with Marisa Viola\n \n \n  \nDecember 29\nExertion\n3:00 p.m EST with Maho Kawachi\n \n \n  \nDecember 30\nMeditation\n3:00 p.m EST with Kevin Townley \n \n  \nDecember 31\nWisdom\n3:00 p.m EST with Crystal Gandrud \n \n

SUMMARY:Inexplicable Magic Meditation and the Path of the Mystic: A Kripalu Retreat with Susan Piver
DESCRIPTION:Though meditation practice is most often presented as a stress-reduction or wellness tool\, that is not what it was created for. It creates the foundation for a life of depth and meaning. It cultivates and reveals the three qualities of the awakened mind: wisdom\, compassion\, and fierce courage–the exact qualities our world needs most right now.  \nIf you are interested in meditation as a spiritual practice (not just self-help) and a support for living ordinary life as a mystic and change agent\, this 5-day program is for you. \nLearn more and register here.

I will make a list of great places to eat and listen to music—Austin is such a wonderful place and I want these retreats to be both deeply serious and completely joyful. \nRetreat is a precious opportunity to disconnect from the day-to-day and give your wisdom mind and loving heart a chance to relax\, open\, and discover something deeper. I look forward to accompanying you on the journey. \nThese retreats are small and personal to ensure a cohesive group. \nFrom past participants in Susan’s in-house retreats:\nI had an incredible experience attending the meditation retreat with Susan Piver held in Austin this June. I was skeptical that a non-facility event would create a similar atmosphere and connections made at a facility designed for retreats. The intimacy of being in someone’s home and Susan’s abilities made this the best retreat I have attended. We became a group of people that might not have ever joined to gather under any other circumstances that bonded under Susan’s guidance and we all accomplished what we needed to for that time. It was a special retreat that will stay with me. –Joell\, Longwood\, FL \nBeing in Susan’s home with 12 others opened me and my heart…It was the perfect container and helped me to connect the way my meditation practice has supported me and carried me through some of the hardest times of my life.  It is what has opened my heart and softened me in a way that allows me to bring love and compassion to people and experiences in a way that I don’t think I would have been able to otherwise. –Barb\, Livonia\, NY \nWill I need a car?\nIt depends where you stay. I live in the heart of South Austin right on a bus line. It is also easy to call Uber or Lyft. The house is 2 miles from downtown Austin\, so plan accordingly if you’d like to stay there. \nWhat should I bring?\nBring your journal\, laptop\, and comfortable clothes for lengthy sittings and writing sessions. I will supply meditation cushions\, chairs\, and whatever is needed for group meditation practice. \nIf you want to go swimming with me in the mornings\, pack a bathing suit and towel. (There will be time after our swim to go back to where you’re staying to shower and change.) \nWhat is included in the price?\n\n4 program days of writing\, meditation\, and community (and fun…you can’t come to Austin and not have fun)\nMeditation instruction and conversation about spirituality\n4 lunches (healthy\, with vegetarian\, vegan\, and gluten-free options)\nCoffee\, tea\, juices\, water\, light snacks throughout the day\nAn evening enneagram workshop\nDinner on the evening of Oct 19th\nMeaningful conversation with Susan and your fellow writers\nA chance to finally get your project moving\n\n \nWhat is the refund policy?\nA refund will be offered (minus the deposit) if you cancel by September 16\, 2024. \nWhat if I have other questions?\nEmail us! Happy to answer any questions. \nFAQs\nWhere is your house? What neighborhood is it in? \nThe house is on Powell Circle in South Austin\, just south of Oltorf and South First streets. \nResidential and quiet but very close to restaurants\, shops\, and the nightlife of South Congress Ave (aka “SoCo.”) \n  \n \n \n \n  \nCan you hook me up with a roommate to help defray some of the expense? \nMaybe. The application form has a space to indicate if you’d like a roommate. If there is more than one of you who does\, I’ll introduce you and you can take it from there. \nWill Susan read and critique my work? \nNo. I will supply the time\, space\, environment\, and rhythm for you to write your heart out\, but I am not a writing teacher. Rather\, I’m a well-published author who has some sense of the vagaries of the writing life (including the path to being published). I’m happy to share what I’ve learned along the way to support you. \nIf there are those who want to get together on their own in the evenings to share work\, that is an option. \n \nI love the idea of a morning swim. Will it be cold? How will I get there and is there a fee? \nBarton Springs is a huge in-town\, spring-fed pool and it is truly my happy place. The water is 68 degrees year-round. There is a huge parking lot. It is a short Uber/Lyft ride from either my neighborhood or downtown Austin. (Especially at 6:30am!) There is no fee before 8:00 am. \nWill I have to come to your house in my wet bathing suit? \nNo\, there will be time to get back to wherever you’re staying to shower and change. \nWhere will we go to eat on October 19th?\n \nWe will be going to True Food Kitchen in Austin. \nHope to see you there! Love\, Susan \nIf you have any questions\, please contact us\, here.

SUMMARY:Learn Meditation as a Spiritual Practice Retreat at Drala Mountain Center
DESCRIPTION:Join Susan Piver and Michael Carroll on this 3-day retreat at Drala Mountain Center where participants will explore what it means to live an awakened life.\nWhen it comes to meditation practice\, what often gets “left on the table” is the noble\, spiritual wisdom that naturally flows from the practice — a profound\, intimate experience validated by countless practitioners over thousands of years of Buddhist practice. The same technique that helps you sleep better has also been shown to cultivate patience\, wisdom\, and the ability to love deeply. It can even lead to complete liberation from suffering!. That’s one hell of a practice. \nDuring this introductory program\, we will explore: \n\nWhat is mindfulness-awareness meditation and where did it come from?\nHow does this simple act of “sitting still” unleash wisdom & compassion?\nHow can we establish a sustainable meditation practice?\nWhy are the Three Supports and theThree Sacred Acts central to the practice?\n\nThis program will offer a thorough and gentle introduction to mindfulness-awareness meditation with time for discussion and optional personal conversation with one of the teachers. Short daily yoga sessions included. \nFor more details and registration information\, click here.

Past attendees have included memoirists\, novelists\, poets\, bloggers\, songwriters\, screenwriters\, and people with a professional commitment to a writing project (like a textbook or a how-to manual). \nParticipants have completed stories\, figured out plot points\, started new projects\, surprised themselves with a new creative direction\, and finally written about what is most important. \nThis program is for you if you long for the time and space to listen to your own voice and sink into a project with the support of a teacher\, a specific schedule\, a community\, and lots (and lots) of tacos. Not to mention\, beautiful weather in Austin. \n \n  \nHow does it work?\nThis program is by application to make sure that our gathering works for all. \nWe will meet each day at my sweet\, sunny home in Austin\, Texas. Our days will begin with meditation and then we will settle in for writing. (A detailed schedule is below.) I will make a list of great places to eat and listen to music—Austin is such a wonderful place and I want these retreats to be both deeply serious and completely joyful. \nRetreat is a precious opportunity to disconnect from the day-to-day and give your wisdom mind and loving heart a chance to relax\, open\, and discover something deeper. I look forward to accompanying you on the journey. \nThese retreats are small and personal to ensure a cohesive group.\nA $500 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your spot. \n  \nTo apply for a scholarship:\n \n\nFrom past participants in Susan’s in-house retreats:\nI had an incredible experience attending the meditation retreat with Susan Piver held in Austin this June. (There will be time after our swim to go back to where you’re staying to shower and change.) \nWhat is included in the price?\n\n4 program days of writing\, meditation\, and community (and fun…you can’t come to Austin and not have fun)\nMeditation instruction and conversation about spirituality\n4 lunches (healthy\, with vegetarian\, vegan\, and gluten-free options)\nCoffee\, tea\, juices\, water\, light snacks throughout the day\nAn evening enneagram workshop\nDinner on the evening of May 31st\nMeaningful conversation with Susan and your fellow writers\nA chance to finally get your project moving\n\n \nWhat is the refund policy?\nA refund will be offered (minus the deposit) if you cancel by April 22\, 2024. There is a parking lot. \nWhere will we go to eat on May 25th?\n \nWe will be going to True Food Kitchen in Austin. \nHope to see you there! Love\, Susan \nIf you have any questions\, please contact us\, here.

SUMMARY:Heart Sutra Day-Long Retreat
DESCRIPTION:May 18\, 2024 | 10:00 am – 5:00 pm\nAustin\, TX\nA Day of Practice and Contemplation of the Heart of Transcendent Wisdom\nCost: Pay What You Can\nSuggested Donation: $50\nLunch Included\n \nThe Heart Sutra (or Prajnaparamita Sutra) is one of the most meaningful texts in all of Buddhism. Prajna means wisdom and paramita is variously translated as “perfected” or “transcendent”. So this text is about the ultimate wisdom. In a way that is both direct and inscrutable\, it lays out the path to liberation from suffering.  \nIn this one-day program\, we will practice meditation and review the text\, line by line. The version we will discuss is here. You’ll see that it’s not particularly long. \nThe point of this gathering is not to master the text intellectually\, but to develop a feeling for it. Though I’ve recited it for close to 30 years\, I’m not sure I understand it any better today than when I first read it–but my relationship to it grows deeper and deeper in ways I can’t describe. It exerts a kind of magic. It points the way to enlightenment. It explains emptiness. In a very concise way\, it shows us what to do to be fully alive.  \nOne of my favorite lines is: “Since there is no obscuration of mind\, there is no fear.” The Heart Sutra points the way to clarifying the confusion that underlies all our fears.  \nIf you’re interested in learning more and considering how you might incorporate the Heart Sutra into your personal practice\, please join me on May 18 for a one-day exploration in a small\, supportive group. \n \nSuggested offering is $50 but please contribute what makes sense to you. \nMay 18 \n10:00 am-5:00 pm \nIncludes lunch \nLocation: 504 Powell Circle\, Austin \nLimited to 15 students

SUMMARY:Free info session May 15: learn about our 2024 Meditation Teacher Training Program
DESCRIPTION:Meditation Teacher Training\nSeptember 7 – November 16\, 2024\nReserve your spot in the info session here. \nPlease join me 7:00p ET-8:00p ET on May 15 to learn about the Open Heart Project 2024 Meditation Teacher Training program which begins September 7.  We will talk about the curriculum\, course requirements\, and how (in my opinion) the teaching path is the richest path of all–whether you go on to teach or not! \nWe are lucky to live in a time when meditation is easily accessible and no longer positioned as new age bs. When I began to practice 30+ years ago and told family and friends that I was a meditator\, they thought I had joined a cult. Now one can learn to meditate in schools\, hospitals\, fitness clubs\, and even on an airplane. (A flight I took recently had a “calming meditations” channel.)\n \nOne of the reasons meditation has become so mainstream is because science says it’s good. Thank you science! Thank you for the extensive research you’ve done over the last few decades  to prove that meditation can regulate blood pressure\, lower the stress hormone cortisol\, help with pain management\, insomnia\, and all manner of things. \n \nHowever… While appreciating that a few decades of research into meditation has concluded beyond doubt that “there’s science behind it\,” we may forget that 2500+ years of Buddhist (anecdotal) research has also proven that meditation doesn’t just help manage so-called negative mind states\, it actually gives rise to extraordinarily positive ones. Western science may have deconstructed depression\, pain\, anger\, and so on–but on the Buddhist side\, compassion\, wisdom\, and fierce courage have been deconstructed. If you stop and look\, you will see that a very precise path has been laid out that explains exactly how to get there. \n \nWeirdly\, these steps are almost always left out of meditation teacher trainings. I guess people think it sounds too woo-woo. That is sad to me because teachings from the Buddhist path–the very teachings that gave rise to the practice we now know as mindfulness meditation–are what give the journey meaning and power beyond what can be described.\n \nI’m so extremely happy to offer a Meditation Teacher Training program that brings the practice together with foundational Buddhist teachings. This 11-week program begins September 7. All the details are here. \n \nAt the May 15 info session\, I’ll be online to talk it all over with you. I’ll share details about the curriculum and answer any questions you may have. After the info session\, I’m offering a limited amount of 15-minute Zoom meetings with me to talk together one-to-one about any remaining concerns.\n \nIt would be great to see you there! Please register for the info session here. A recording will be sent to all who register so don’t worry if you can’t join live. \nI hope to see you there.

SUMMARY:Intensive practice and ordinary life: A free info session with Michael Carroll & Susan Piver
DESCRIPTION:March 20\, 2024 | 7PM – 8PM EST \nReserve your spot in the info session here. \nWhen people ask me how to deepen their meditation practice\, I almost always suggest a meditation retreat. When you step away from the busy-ness of daily life\, you simply see more clearly. \nThat said\, meditating for extended periods can seem like an impossible burden\, even a little bit scary. However\, millions of people over the centuries have done this. In this conversation\, we will explore how best to engage intensive practice and discuss how such discipline impacts the very fabric of our ordinary life. \nWe will also be available to answer any questions about the ten day retreat we are teaching this summer at Drala Mountain Center\, June 26 – July 6. During this info session\, we will talk about the benefits of stepping out of ordinary life and also share details of the retreat for those who are interested. \nPlease register here for the March 20 info session\, 7:00-8:00 PM ET. \nAll who register will receive a link to the recording even if you cannot attend live. \n

SUMMARY:Why go on a meditation retreat? Free info session with Michael Carroll & Susan Piver
DESCRIPTION:January 11\, 2024 | 7PM – 8PM EST \nReserve your spot in the info session here. \nI had my reservations the first time someone suggested I go on a long meditation retreat. I mean\, sitting doing nothing for days on end? I had so much to do\, how could I take time to do that level of nothing? What if they try to indoctrinate me into a cult? If I can’t stand it\, how can I leave? \nI’m not sure what made me decide to give it a try. Maybe it was the assurances of people I trusted that it would be the best thing I ever did. \nThe day before the retreat ended\, I thought THIS IS THE BEST THING I’VE EVER DONE. I wanted to stay there for good. When I came back home\, I felt fully re-energized to dive back into life. \nSo\, my personal impressions aside\, why should you go to an in-person retreat? Because it the most effective way to stabilize and deepen your practice. \nPlease join me and fellow teacher Michael Carroll on January 11th at 7p EST to talk about what actually goes on during a lengthy retreat. We’re hosting a free one-hour info session to answer all of your questions. \nAND…we’re co-teaching a retreat\, Authentic Presence and the Feminine Principle\, from June 26 – July 6. We will also share details about the program during the info session. \nWhether you can attend this retreat or not\, we invite you to explore the purpose and meaning of taking time away from everyday busy-ness. We think you will find what we have: a deeper connection to your true self and a chance to glimpse the vast wisdom that arises when you allow your mind to rest. \nPlease register for the info session here. \nAll who register will receive a link to the recording. When the link is sent\, there will also be a chance to schedule a 15-minute one-to-one Zoom conversation with one of us to discuss any additional concerns. \nI hope to see you there.

SUMMARY:Building a Mindful New Year
DESCRIPTION:A free online program\nEnter 2024 with an open heart.\n\n \nDecember 26-31 from 3:00-3:45 pm EST\n“If we want to obtain enlightenment by becoming a Bodhisattva\, it is necessary to actualize wisdom and compassion. This is done by the practice of what are called the six paramitas\, or ‘transcendental actions.’” ~ Traleg Rinpoche \n2023 has been an exceedingly difficult year. We are all trying to comprehend the incomprehensible. Grasp the ungraspable. Contribute to the good without adding to the confusion. \nWith all that is going on in the world\, it sometimes feels impossible. It is not. We can overcome aggression\, remain open hearted\, and see life clearly. According to Buddhist thought\, there are only six skills you need. They are called the six paramitas (or transcendent actions): \nGenerosity\nDiscipline\nPatience\nExertion\nMeditation\nWisdom \nAccording to Mahayana Buddhism\, the six paramitas have the power to transport us to the “other shore\,” the shore of sanity\, decency\, kindness\, and complete liberation. \nDon’t take my word for this! Explore them yourself and see. \nThe Open Heart Project has invited several accomplished Buddhist teachers to teach us about these powerful actions\, one each between December 26 – 31. Each day at 3:00 p.m. EST\, a different teacher will lead a 45-minute session to explore one of the paramitas. We will start with generosity on December 26th and end with wisdom on December 31st. \nYou will hear teachings from a variety of perspectives and have a chance to ask questions and be in dialogue with the teachers and each other. Each class will include meditation and a talk followed by a question and answer period. \nYou are invited to drop into one or all sessions. Each one will be recorded. Together\, we will enter the new year in a community of goodness. \nPlease don’t miss this opportunity to gain insight into these potent teachings and\, as important\, the power that comes with practicing together in community. You are not alone! There is much to learn! It is all possible! \nTHIS PROGRAM IS FREE. All you have to do is register. \nIf you can’t make it to the sessions live\, no worries. We’ll send you a link to the recordings. \nLove\, Susan \n  \nHere is the schedule: \nDecember 26\nGenerosity\n3:00 p.m EST with Susan Piver \n \nDecember 27\nDiscipline\n3:00 p.m EST with Bridget Bailey\n \n \nDecember 28\nPatience\n3:00 p.m EST with Kevin Townley\n \n \nDecember 29\nExertion\n3:00 p.m EST with Marisa Viola\n \n \nDecember 30\nMeditation\n3:00 p.m EST with Maho Kawachi\n \n \nDecember 31\nWisdom\n3:00 p.m EST with Sokuzan

Thanks to all who attended.\n  \n \nWhy this retreat?\nThe question I hear most often about my recent book\, The Buddhist Enneagram\, is “what do Buddhism and the enneagram have to do with each other?” Fair question! \nFor me\, they are perfectly intertwined. Both Buddhism and the enneagram offer profound (and extremely practical) insight into identity\, love\, and living a good life. Each emphasizes the central importance of compassion. \nBuddhism has taught me so much about the principles behind true compassion (rather than idiot compassion) and the enneagram has shown me how to actually do it. \nWhen I feel angry or heartbroken or hopeless\, Buddhist practice has taught me how to meet those mind states honestly. The enneagram has taught me what to do next–with my particular mind\, within my specific relationships\, and in regard to the circumstances of my life at this moment. To me\, they are entirely consonant partners on the journey. \nIn this small\, in-person retreat\, we will explore what it means to live fearlessly in a world of beauty\, sorrow\, possibility\, and constant uncertainty. Through sitting meditation practice and studying the nine heart-opening paths of enneagram\, we will learn more about who we are and how to love more deeply. \nIt would be lovely to see you there! \nFAQS\nWhere do we meet?\nWe will meet each day at my sweet\, sunny home in Austin\, Texas. Our days will begin with meditation and then we will settle in for contemplation and conversation. (A detailed schedule is below.) \nWhat should I bring?\nBring your journal and comfortable clothes. I will supply meditation cushions\, chairs\, and whatever is needed for group meditation practice. \nIf you want to go swimming with me in the mornings\, pack a bathing suit and towel. It’s super fun! Try it! (There will be time after our swim to go back to where you’re staying to shower and change.) \n \nWhere is your house? What neighborhood is it in?\nThe house is on Powell Circle in South Austin\, just south of Oltorf and South First streets.\nResidential and quiet but very close to restaurants\, shops\, and the nightlife of South Congress Ave (aka “SoCo.”) \nThe house is an easy 15-20 minute drive from the Austin airport. \nWhat is the schedule?\nThe schedule is designed to give you a combination of structured time\, personal space\, and connection with your fellow practitioners—and some time to enjoy Austin. How will I get there and is there a fee? \nBarton Springs is a huge in-town\, spring-fed pool and it is truly my happy place. I literally swim there every day (barring thunderstorms). The water is 68 degrees year-round. It is a short Uber/Lyft ride from either my neighborhood or downtown Austin. (Especially at 6:30 am!) There is no fee before 8:00 am. \n \nWill I have to come to your house in a wet bathing suit?\nNo\, there will be time to get back to wherever you’re staying to shower and change. \n \nWhere will we go to eat on Saturday night?\nTrue Food Kitchen  \nIf you have questions\, please don’t hesitate to email us here. It would be a joy to practice together in person!

SUMMARY:A Four-Week Online Course to Study the Heart Sutra
DESCRIPTION:What is the Heart Sutra?\nThe Heart Sutra (or Prajnaparamita Sutra) is one of the central texts in all of Buddhism. It is widely known\, demonstrably powerful\, and\, I would say\, thoroughly incomprehensible. I’ve been chanting it almost everyday for 30 years and while I can’t tell you that my understanding has improved (“Form is emptiness\, emptiness also is form”?)\, my relationship to it continues to deepen. Each time I recite it\, I notice something new. Some days I love it beyond description. On other days\, I can’t stand it or it bores me. Just like a relationship. But throughout\, it continues to invoke some kind of magic that does not play by ordinary rules of intellectualizing. It introduces us to transcendent wisdom\, beyond conventional thought. It is a strange doorway and I would love to walk through it with you. \nThe full Prajnaparamita Sutra is hundreds of pages long but there is also a version that is one page long. That is the one we will study together. (Parenthetically\, I have it on good authority that while the sutra can be elucidated by hundreds of pages or a single page\, it can also be expressed in a single syllable: Ah.) \nWhere does the power of the feminine enter in?\nIn some schools of Buddhist thought\, wisdom itself is considered synonymous with the feminine principle\, a kind of rich\, full\, luminous emptiness. What arises from this emptiness is true compassion (which is associated with the masculine principle). In our time together\, we will visit the dark and often obscured power that comes from recognizing that we are not separate. \nHow will we study together?\nWhen you are fully registered\, you will receive a link to the text we will study. Crystal Gandrud and I will meet with you for four two-hour classes in September (details below). In each class\, we will present topics related to the Heart Sutra. We will go over the sutra line by line and practice it together. You will receive suggestions for incorporating it into your daily practice. We will make sure to leave plenty of time for discussion. \nIn addition to our class time\, you will be assigned to a WhatsApp group (based on your time zone). Our hope is that you will get together once a week to practice via Zoom (we will provide the link). There will also be optional essay questions to answer each week with a chance to respond to each other’s reflections. \nLive attendance is strongly requested because this material is quite deep and personal. It comes alive within a community. That said\, each class will be recorded so if you need to miss one\, you can catch up easily. \n  \nSCHEDULE & DETAILS\nSeptember 9\, 16\, 23\, & 30\n11AM – 1PM ET\n \nSpace is limited to 50 participants. Two full scholarships are offered. \nEnrollment is now closed. \nWhat is the refund policy?\nCancellations made by August 26th are eligible for a refund.  \nTwo full scholarships will be awarded. The application period is now closed and all applicants have been notified. If you do not see your letter regarding your application status\, reach out to us here. \nWhat if I have other questions?\nEmail us! Happy to answer any questions.

SUMMARY:Authentic Presence: Reawakening Spiritual Confidence In-Person Retreat
DESCRIPTION:A two-week meditation retreat offered in partnership with The Wisdom Seat\, the Open Heart Project\, and Drala Mountain Center\nSusan Piver\, joined by Michael Carroll and Loden Nyima\, will guide participants during this special retreat.\nOur modern life presents us with a profound spiritual paradox: while we build remarkable technology\, impressive resources\, and growing prosperity\, we also encounter a world filled with numbing devices\, growing anxiety and distressing poverty. We build fresh\, inspiring human connections around the world via social media\, yet we are haunted by incessant digital reminders to become a better version of ourselves — faster\, smarter\, richer\, better looking\, and more productive. We humans are building a miraculous world\, yet\, somehow\, we find our confusion\, fear and anxiety blossoming as well. \nExploring such a paradox need not be so distressing\, however. In fact\, maybe such circumstances are inviting us to reawaken our spiritual confidence. Drawing on the profound Mahayana tradition of the Bodhisattva\, this retreat will explore such questions as: \n\nHow can formless meditation help us rediscover our natural confidence?\nHow can we skillfully offer compassion\, wisdom\, and dignity to a world in need of our help?\nWhy is the “wisdom of a broken heart” so central to the practice of meditation?\nIs meditation a “socially responsible gesture”? and if so\, why?\nWhat is “threefold boredom” and how can it help tame modern-day speed and aggression?\n\nIn this two-week retreat\, we will practice formless meditation intensively\, exploring techniques passed down through Mahayana Buddhism and the teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche.\nRefuge and Bodhisattva Vows will be offered. \nParticipants can expect a deep\, contemplative environment\, focused primarily on six to eight hours of daily meditation practice with supportive talks and interviews. There will also be time for rest and connecting with nature. \nMore details and registration information here.

\n  \nTo apply for a scholarship:\nScholarship applications are now closed; all applicants have been notified of award status. \n\nFrom past participants in Susan’s in-house retreats:\nI had an incredible experience attending the meditation retreat with Susan Piver held in Austin this June. (There will be time after our swim to go back to where you’re staying to shower and change.) \nWhat is included in the price?\n\n4 program days of writing\, meditation\, and community (and fun…you can’t come to Austin and not have fun)\nMeditation instruction and conversation about spirituality\n4 lunches (healthy\, with vegetarian\, vegan\, and gluten-free options)\nCoffee\, tea\, juices\, water\, light snacks throughout the day\nAn evening enneagram workshop\nDinner on the evening of May 31st\nMeaningful conversation with Susan and your fellow writers\nA chance to finally get your project moving\n\n \nWhat is the refund policy?\nA refund will be offered (minus the deposit) if you cancel by April 25\, 2023. \nWhere will we go to eat on May 31st?\n \nWe will be going to True Food Kitchen in Austin. \nHope to see you there! Love\, Susan \nIf you have any questions\, please contact us\, here.

SUMMARY:Build a Mindful New Year
DESCRIPTION:A free online program\nLet’s walk into 2023 together with clear minds and open hearts.\n\n \nDecember 26-31 from 3:00-3:45 pm EST\n“If we want to obtain enlightenment by becoming a Bodhisattva\, it is necessary to actualize wisdom and compassion. This is done by the practice of what are called the six paramitas\, or ‘transcendental actions.’” Traleg Rinpoche \nWhat will the next year bring for you? Those you love? The world? \nThis is a time of year when thoughts naturally turn toward what we want to create going forward\, how to best support what we believe in\, and what we can do to make a better world. We want to move into the future with courage\, compassion\, and clarity. \nWith all that is going on in the world\, it sometimes feels impossible. It is not. We can overcome aggression\, remain open hearted\, and see the situations of our lives clearly. \nAccording to Buddhist thought\, there are only six skills you need. They are called the six paramitas (or transcendent actions): \nGenerosity\nDiscipline\nPatience\nExertion\nMeditation\nWisdom \nWhat makes these skills transcendent is when we offer them from a deep longing to be of benefit to others. I know you have this longing. According to ancient texts from Mahayana Buddhism\, an understanding of the six paramitas has the power to transport us to the “other shore”\, the shore of sanity\, decency\, kindness\, and complete liberation. \nDon’t take my word for this! Explore them yourself and see. The Open Heart Project has invited a collection of accomplished Buddhist teachers to teach us about these powerful actions\, one each between December 26 – 31. \nEach day at 3:00 p.m. EST\, a different teacher will lead a 45-minute session to explore one of the paramitas. We will start with generosity on December 26th and end with wisdom on December 31st.\nYou will hear teachings from a variety of perspectives and have a chance to ask questions and be in dialogue with the teachers and each other. \nEach class will begin with a talk\, followed by a guided meditation and a question and answer period.\nYou are invited to drop into one or all sessions. Each one will be recorded. SUMMARY:The Heart Sutra In-Person Retreat: Awakening True Wisdom

The scholarships will be awarded on August 1\, 2022. \n \n \nWhy this retreat?\nThe very first time I ever meditated was in the Spring of 1993. I had no idea what I was doing\, what to expect\, or even much about the person who had volunteered to teach me. Even though we had only met once at a party\, I just knew that it was the right thing to do. That said\, I was still plenty nervous. 1993\, y’all! Meditation was still considered strange. In any case\, he kindly welcomed me in and asked me a few questions about my interest in meditation. I have no idea what I said in response. Then we sat on cushions on the floor opposite his very beautiful shrine and he handed me a piece of paper printed on both sides. “We’ll chant this together before we begin. It’s called the Heart Sutra. Just follow along with me and skip over the words you can’t pronounce.” \nThus have I heard. Once the Blessed One was dwelling in Råjagriha at Vulture Peak mountain\, together with a great gathering of the sangha of monks and a great gathering of the sangha of bodhisattvas. At that time the Blessed One entered the samådhi that expresses the dharma called “profound illumination\,”… \nWHAT?\nWhy were we saying these words? What did they mean? I had no idea\, but I stumbled along as suggested. Then he gave me meditation instruction and we sat together for 45 minutes. Yes\, 45 minutes. It went by in a flash and was absolutely interminable. What had I gotten myself into? \nIt is just now\, nearly 30 years later\, that I am beginning to intuit answers to these questions. In the interim\, I have chanted the Heart Sutra countless times\, almost every day\, often with no more understanding than the very first time I ever recited it…while\, at the same time\, the meaning continues to ripen and deepen in ways that cannot be deciphered\, only felt. It points to the truth of emptiness in a way that is unrelenting\, challenging\, heartening\, confounding\, and inspiring. \nThe Heart Sutra (or prajnaparamita sutra) is a seminal text within the entire Buddhist tradition\, most particularly the Mahayana schools where it is the core practice. It is also a foundational practice within the Vajrayana Tibetan Buddhist traditions I have trained in. \nA few years after I learned to meditate\,\nmy meditation teacher (the same guy–still my meditation teacher) invited me to a small weekend retreat with a few friends in upstate New York for the sole purpose of studying the Heart Sutra. For three days\, we practiced meditation\, recited the Heart Sutra\, studied it\, memorized it\, discussed it\, recited it again\, ate dinner…and then began again. It was a glorious experience. \nUntil now\, it never occurred to me to offer a similar opportunity to the Open Heart Project. I have no idea why. But at some recent point\, I realized that my whole dharma life had been pointing to this possibility. The Heart Sutra initiated my life as a student. Before I ever meditated\, it set the tone for the practice–perfectly\, I might add. Our work together is called The Open Heart Project. The essence of heart-opening is the recognition of emptiness-luminosity. There is no better support for deepening your practice than this remarkable sutra. \n\nSCHEDULE\n\n6:30p – 8p Opening session at my house: introductions\, overview\, discussion \n\n630a – 730a Optional swim at Barton Springs! \n9a-1030a Opening practice session and introduction to the Heart Sutra \n1030a-1130a Sutra memorization and study session \n1130a-12p Practice session and discussion \n12p-130p Lunch (at my house; included) \n130p-3 Practice session and discussion \n3-4 Tea and snacks (included) \n4-5 Practice session \nDinner on your own \n\n630a – 730a Optional swim at Barton Springs! \n9a-1030a Practice session \n1030a-1130a Sutra memorization and study session \n1130a-12p Practice session and discussion \n12p-130p Lunch (at my house; included) \n130p-2 Practice session and discussion \n2p-3p Discussion \n3-4 Tea and snacks (included) \n4-5 Practice session \nDinner on your own\n \n\n630a – 730a Optional swim at Barton Springs! \n9a-1030a Practice session \n1030a-1130a Sutra memorization and study session \n1130a-12p Practice session and discussion \n12p-130p Lunch (at my house; included) \n130p-2 Practice session and discussion \n2p-3p Discussion \n3-4 Tea and snacks (included) \n4-5 Practice session \nDinner together; someplace healthy and fun (included) \n\n630a – 730a Optional swim at Barton Springs! \n930a-11a Practice session \n11a-12p Closing conversation \n12p-130p Lunch (at my house; included) \nFarewells! \n  \nCost and other details\nIncluded: The retreat fee is $1500 and includes practice and study that unfold over a 5-day period. But if you’re anything like everyone\, you find that you recreate certain obstacles over and over through: \n\nHarsh self-talk\nRepeating the same argument with loved ones\nRunning into identical obstacles at work\nAn inability to communicate with certain types of people\nPutting off commitments to yourself.\n\nWhat if there was a way to cultivate more compassion toward yourself\, communicate more clearly with the important people in your life\, and have on-the-spot insight into solving interpersonal problems? \nI have discovered that there is indeed such a way and it is called the enneagram. \nI have studied this system of 9 “types” for close to thirty years and I use it every single day to understand myself\, communicate with students and colleagues\, and deepen my closest relationships. It is rich\, nuanced\, and powerful beyond what I could ever describe. Over time\, my experience as a student and teacher of Buddhism has flavored my understanding of the system and therefore I have my own particular way of presenting it. \nI’m so grateful you are interested in The Buddhist Enneagram which goes into detail about it all. \n1) Pre-order your copy of the book here.\n2) Return to this page.\n3) Fill in the form below to register for a free webinar\, October 1st\, 12p – 2p ET.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFirst Name *\n\n\n\n\nEmail Address *\n\n\n\n\nOrder Number *\n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAny questions\, please email us here.
